Upon entering the shops, the aroma of the exquisite herbs and spices wafting through the air will transport you to the top of Mt. Taygetos, the local mountain.
You’ll taste local mouth-watering homemade delicacies, flavoursome Messinian appetizers and all sorts of traditional Greek treats.
You’ll take part in a short yet fulfilling olive-oil tasting with a professional and certified olive-oil taster and enjoy exquisite local wines through a short wine tasting along with our oenologist, Mr. Giannis!

What you'll do
You will visit the historic centre of one of the most beautiful coastal cities of the Peloponnese: Kalamata! The place is known for its exquisite olive oil and its world-famous black Kalamata olives. However, the city has so much more to offer and this experience will help you uncover its hidden gems. You’ll set off on your gastronomic experience with a leisurely stroll around the streets of this magnificent coastal city. Visit local family-owned food shops and a workshop, learn old stories and feel the authenticity of the locals. We will make 6 food stops in local stores, taste mouthwatering treats, food and drinks and we will conclude our amazing Food tour with a delicious light lunch in a Greek ouzo tavern. - The traditional workshop in Part 2 is open only in the mornings and closed in the afternoons. Therefore, when the Food tour takes place in the afternoons, either we visit another available workshop or the two local products are given at the end of the experience and the tour starts with the visit in the local shop in Part 3.
- Availability: The food tour experience is available in the mornings from Monday to Saturday, excluding Sundays, Holy Friday – Easter Tuesday and Greek official holidays.
- In the afternoons, the wine shop closes at 20:45 p.m. so the wine tasting of the local wines, takes place during the light dinner.
- On Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays afternoon, most of the local shops are closed among them, the Coffee Micro Roastery. Therefore, we visit another Coffee shop and we enjoy our Greek coffee while walking in the historical centre.
- The duration of the Food tour experience can be tailored to individual needs of each guest.

My daughter lives in Greece, so we don't do the 'typical' tourist trap things. We opt to go to other areas for a few nights to learn about the different areas. Kalamata was an easy choice to learn more about olives, and this tour went beyond that! Maria is an exceptional, warm, proud local who is has formed an alliance with vendors. She takes you to their shops to teach about local offerings--and taste! The tastings were all wonderful, even with a 4 year old in tow for 4 hours. Maria was awesome with our family of 5, and treated us like we were her family. She fell in love with my granddaughter, and kept her attention. We also got goodie bags at the final stop--family style lunch and wine--and there was something special for the little one. That toy entertained her for the long drive back home. Probably one of the best tours we've ever done, all over the world. Learn from the friendly locals and support their economy :)
We had such a lovely time on this food tour of Kalamata. Maria was a fantastic guide - warm, friendly and incredibly knowledgeable, and it was clear throughout the tour how passionate she is about Greek food, culture and her home country. We got to try a great variety of delicious local foods, many of which we probably wouldn’t have discovered on our own, while also learning about the history and character of Kalamata as we explored the city. Maria brought everything to life with her stories and enthusiasm. My boyfriend and I both thoroughly enjoyed the experience and came away feeling like we had experienced a much more authentic side of Kalamata. We’d definitely recommend this tour to anyone visiting the city - especially if you love good food and want to learn more about Greece from someone who genuinely loves sharing it.
Maria is an incredible woman and has put together a lovely tour filled with knowledge of Greece and Kalamata’s history and culture. Throughout the tour, you get to try many delicious Greek foods from small, local businesses and learn about olive oil from an expert. As a solo, female traveler, I definitely recommend Mama’s Flavors!

Our food tour with Mamas Flavours was one of the highlights of our entire trip to the Peloponnese. Maria Monastirioti is so knowledgeable, engaging and gracious, and she taught us a great deal not only about the Greek foods that we had a chance to taste, but also about the sights around Kalamata that we saw during our walking tour. She readily customized our experience to fit our time constraints on the day of our tour, and also helped us tour a church I was interested in seeing when we were nearby. We happened to schedule this tour in advance of our arrival in Greece and it was actually our last day there. My biggest wish after was that I had actually toured with Maria the first day we were in Greece, because we would have been able to appreciate and seek out culinary experiences with greater knowledge. I did buy several products, but there is absolutely no pressure at all to purchase anything - Maria made that very clear at each stop. We were a party of four adults, two in our 50s and two in their 20s and everyone agrees that touring with Maria was one of the most memorable things about our trip. Highly recommended!

She is so organised, prepared and knowledgeable, the entire process has been faultless, and the tour far exceeded any expectations we had.
