Overview
Mike is a 3rd generation high school shop teacher with a decade of experience making students and teachers alike successful in all types of creations.
Mike will start this fast paced class by making the sparks fly on a state of the art CNC Plasma cutter to supply you with a flat metal animal blank in the shape of a variety of alaska creatures such as Sockeye, Coho or King Salmon, halibut, grizzly bears, dungeness crabs, bald eagles, pacific octopus and more!
You will get a unique chance to see inside a working cnc workshop and learn some of the tricks of the trade for turning dull, crusty steel into spectacular one-of-a-kind Alaskan keepsakes.

What you'll do
In this fast-paced 2.5 hour class you will learn how to easily and safely use the 2" die grinder to smooth and texture your creation. You will remember making sparks fly while geared up in all the provided safety equipment. After grinding and texturing your metal creature of choice you will use a tear drop mallet to bring your fish to life with 3D shape. Choose from Salmon, Halibut, Crab, Humpback or Orca Whale, Grizzly Bear, Pacific Octopus, Eagle and more! After you complete the shaping we will turn the heat up with a propane torch to apply deep hues of bronze, purple and blue to your Alaskan creature to create a truly one-of-a-kind Alaskan keepsake. Your piece of metal art will be as breathtaking as the views of Sitka Sound. Whether the fish are biting, or the seas are raging you will take home an amazing catch you will never forget.
Meeting & pickup
Hotel pickup is included for all travellers.
Your ground transport will be provided by Sitka Tours. Once you are ashore please head directly up the ramp and into the terminal building. You will group under door #3 and look for a Sitka Tours rep driving a white vehicle with blue lettering. Often there are reps standing near the door with blue blazers. Ask any rep or driver and they will direct you to the correct shuttle. Please be shoreside by 8:35 for a 8:45 departure or 12:35 for a 12:45 departure.

If you want to leave Sitka with an authentic souvenir, this is the excursion for you. You actually put the finishing touches on an animal that represents Alaska. You use a grinder and a blowtorch. Trust me that was a first for me. It was great fun.

The instructor was knowledgeable, thoughtful, organized and helpful the entire time. He helped and guided the entire time. It was fun and amazing to see the final pieces that we created!
This class was so flippin cool. Not only did I learn new cool art skills, but I got to go home with proof of those skills. Highly, highly, highly recommend this class. Teachers were patient and encouraging throughout.
We had so much fun! We had 4 people in our group. Mike (the owner) met us at the Ward Cove cruise port to make sure our shuttle got us to the shop. My family of 4 had an awesome time picking out our creature and then completing the details! Luke was our instructor and he is a welding instructor at a local university. We were very thankful for having the option to mail them home (instead of taking them with us on 10 more days in Alaska), for drinks after the class and the shuttle back to the ship.
I had a blast doing the Metal art class here. There were about 20 people in the class. We were given a piece of steel in the shape of an animal species that we chose from one of about sixteen different options. I chose to make a Bear. First we took off all the burs created when the cutouts were burnt on their plasma cutter with a die grinder. Then we used a finishing grinder to add texture to our pieces. Next step was a bit of forming and bending with a few tabletop devices created specifically for the wall hangings we were making. Finally we added color by using heat from a touch. This was the tricky part and the heat changes colors very quickly. It was a bit of a challenge, to keep going from the brown to purple. I was making a brown bear since that is the only kind they have in Sitka. I had a great time and would highly recommend this workshop to anyone who wants to make art and create a cool souvenir to take or ship home.
When I spotted this excursion activity when booking my cruise, I knew it was going to be one of my favorites.... it absolutely did not disappoint! No matter your skill level, the instructor made this a fun and informative experience. Each person picks from a large selection of precut flat metal animals , and leaves with a beautiful hand crafted souvenir . I will definitely do this again if I'm ever back in Sitka.
