- Agora Open Air Museum Ancient Smyrna: The Suffering Church - We will meet you at Izmir Airport or at your hotel at Kusadasi, Izmir, or Selcuk. We start our pilgrimage at the heart of Smyrna (Rev. 2:8-11), the 'Suffering Church.' While walking through the Roman Agora, our guide will recount the powerful story of St. Polycarp, the Bishop of Smyrna and a disciple of St. John, who was martyred in this city for refusing to renounce Christ. Although the modern Polycarp Church is currently under restoration, standing in this ancient civic center brings to life the reality of Roman persecution and the promise of the 'Crown of Life' mentioned in Revelation. Please note: St. Polycarp Church is currently closed for long-term restoration. We will cover his inspiring life and martyrdom in depth during our visit to the Agora, the actual site of Roman judgment.
- Pergamon Ancient City Pergamon Acropolis: Where Satan Has His Throne - We ascend to the Acropolis of Pergamum (Rev. 2:12-17). St. John described this city as the place 'where Satan has his throne.' Our guide will explain this reference while showing you the Temple of Trajan and the Altar of Zeus foundation, symbolizing the intense pressure early Christians faced from the Imperial Cult. You will also see the steepest theater of the ancient world and discuss the biblical promises of the 'Hidden Manna' and the 'White Stone.
- The Asklepion The Asklepion: Ancient Healing Center - Visit the world's first major psychiatric hospital, dedicated to Asclepius, the serpent god of healing. Here, we contrast the pagan methods of healing (incubation, sacred water, mud baths) with the miracles of the Early Church. It’s a fascinating look at the spiritual atmosphere that surrounded the Christians of Pergamum.
- Red Basilica (Kizil Avlu) Red Basilica (St. John's Church) - A massive structure originally built for Egyptian gods (Serapis), later converted into the Basilica of St. John, one of the actual Seven Churches of Revelation. Seeing this colossal temple turned into a House of God is a powerful symbol of Christianity's triumph over paganism in Asia Minor. A perfect photo opportunity and a moment to reflect on the church's resilience. At the end of the tour, we will drive you to your hotel in Bergama Town Center. Overnight in Bergama.
- The Corrupt Church & Jezebel - Our first stop is Thyatira (Akhisar - Rev. 2:18-29). In the Bible, this church was praised for its love and service but warned against tolerating 'Jezebel' (moral compromise). While walking through the ruins of the ancient Basilica in the modern city center, our guide will discuss the challenge of the early Christians who lived here among powerful trade guilds and pagan pressure. A quick but spiritually significant stop to understand the 'eyes like blazing fire' of Christ.
- Sardis (Sardes) Ancient Sardis: The Dead Church - We proceed to the magnificent ruins of Sardis (Rev. 3:1-6), the capital of the Lydian Kingdom. You will be amazed by the massive Gymnasium and the grand Synagogue. However, the spiritual reality was different: Jesus called it 'The Dead Church' despite its wealthy appearance. Standing on the ancient marble road, we reflect on the warning to 'wake up' and the promise to those who do not soil their clothes.
- Philadelphia (Alasehir): The Faithful Church - Our final church of the day is Philadelphia (Alasehir - Rev. 3:7-13), the city of 'Brotherly Love.' Unlike others, this church received no rebuke from Christ. We visit the towering remains of the Byzantine Basilica of St. John. Here, our guide will explain the beautiful promise of the 'Open Door' that no one can shut and what it means to be a 'Pillar in the Temple of God.' A peaceful end to a day of profound history.
- Pamukkale Today involves scenic drives through the Turkish countryside and vineyards between the ancient sites. A perfect opportunity to rest, discuss the biblical sites with your guide, and enjoy the landscape. At the end of the tour, we will drive to Pamukkale. Dinner and overnight at a 5-star hotel in Pamukkale.
- Hierapolis & Martyrium of St. Philip - We enter Hierapolis, the 'Holy City.' While famous for its white terraces, for the pilgrim, its true value lies in the Martyrium of St. Philip. Here, the Apostle Philip was martyred and buried. We will visit his octagonal tomb and the massive ancient theater, which overlooks the Lycus River Valley. Walking through the largest Necropolis (cemetery) in Anatolia, we reflect on the Christian hope of resurrection amidst thousands of pagan tombs.
- Hierapolis Arkeoloji Muzesi Located inside the ancient Roman Baths, this museum houses beautiful statues and sarcophagi from Hierapolis and Laodicea. Seeing the artistry of the era helps us visualize the wealthy, pagan society that the early Christians (like Epaphras and Philip) were trying to evangelize. A short but culturally enriching stop.
- Cleopatra Pools A unique opportunity to swim among submerged Roman columns in crystal-clear, warm thermal water. Legend says Cleopatra herself swam here. This is a leisure stop to relax your body in the 'Sacred Pool.' (Note: Swimming is optional and requires an extra entrance fee payable on-site. Guests who prefer not to swim can enjoy the cafeteria by the pool)
- Pamukkale Thermal Pools Witness the natural miracle of God's creation: The 'Cotton Castle.' You will have free time to walk barefoot on the snow-white travertine terraces formed by mineral waters. As you overlook the plains below, it is the perfect time for meditation and photography. The healing waters here have drawn seekers for millennia
- Laodicea Our final stop is Laodicea (Rev. 3:14-22), the 'Lukewarm Church.' Our guide will show you the ancient water distribution system that brought hot water from Hierapolis and cold water from Colossae—arriving here 'lukewarm.' This physical reality inspired St. John's letter. Exploring the newly excavated 'Church of Laodicea' and the Syria Street, you will understand why this city was so wealthy yet spiritually 'poor, blind, and naked.
- Kusadasi At the end of the tour, we will drive you to Kusadasi. Overnight at a 4-star hotel.
- Ephesus Ancient City The Loveless Church: Ancient Ephesus - The climax of our biblical journey: Ephesus (Rev. 2:1-7). As we walk the marble Curetes Street, our guide will bring to life the bustling metropolis where St. Paul spent three years preaching. You will stand in the magnificent Great Theatre (scene of the riot in Acts 19) and admire the Celsus Library. We will discuss why Christ called this the 'Loveless Church'—urging them to return to their first love—and the profound history of the Council of Ephesus.
- Ephesus Terrace Houses The Hidden Luxury: Terrace Houses (Roman Villas) - "Located inside the ancient city, these are the 'Homes of the Rich' in Roman Ephesus. Often called 'history in 3D,' these roofed excavations reveal incredible mosaics, frescoes, and private baths. - The House of the Virgin Mary Mary's Refuge: The House of the Virgin Mary - A deeply spiritual pilgrimage site located on Mt. Koressos. According to tradition and the visions of Anne Catherine Emmerich, this is where St. John brought the Virgin Mary after the crucifixion (John 19:26-27). It is a place of absolute peace. You will have time to visit the humble stone house/chapel, light a candle for your loved ones, and collect water from the 'Holy Fountains'.
- The Temple of Artemis The Fallen Wonder: Temple of Artemis - We stop to witness the site of one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Once a glorious temple that drew pilgrims from all over antiquity (and sparked the riot against St. Paul), today only a single column remains standing. It serves as a powerful symbol of the fall of paganism and the victory of the Christian faith in Asia Minor.
- Basilica of St. John The Tomb of the Apostle: Basilica of St. John - A fitting end to our Seven Churches tour. We visit the burial place of St. John the Apostle, the author of Revelation. Built by Emperor Justinian, this massive basilica stands on Ayasuluk Hill. Standing at St. John's tomb, overlooking the ancient city, is the perfect moment to reflect on the letters written to the churches and the journey you have just completed.

After our final visits in Ephesus, we provide a comfortable, private transfer to Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport (ADB) or your hotel in Izmir. Güfte’s deep regional knowledge and amazing interpersonal skills turned a simple trip into something truly unforgettable. She didn’t just tell us dry historical facts and dates; instead, she wove useful information into captivating stories that brought each destination’s culture and spirit to life. In other words, she connected the dots, drawing parallels between the past and present, which helped us understand better what happened at the sites we visited. She told stories with purpose, rhythm, and relevance, making history more human, sparking curiosity, and keeping our attention. And most importantly, she wasn’t a chatty guide; she balanced informative commentary with comfortable silence. Her comprehensive knowledge about the local area, customs, and landmarks, combined with her genuine enthusiasm, was contagious. My husband and I had scheduled a Greek Cruise and one of the stops was going to be Ephesus. Revelation is my husband’s favorite book in the Bible and so he asked me if it was possible to extend our vacation to see the rest of the churches. I was a little nervous about scheduling a trip to Turkey on my own, but after some research I found Puerto Travel. Ayfer Selci, at the travel agency answered, all of my initial questions and handled all of the details of the trip. She was quick to respond, very professional and put my mind at ease relative to the details. Ayfer is the reason I chose to book the trip. Puerto Travel was able to customize the tour to meet our needs. For example, the 7 Churches tour is typically a 4 -day tour. They were able to modify it so that we were able to see all of things we wanted in 3 days – which was the amount of time we would be in Turkey. Day 1 - they picked us up from the cruise terminal and we saw Mother Mary’s House and Ephesus. Several days later, after our cruise was completed, we flew back to Izmir for the second and third days of the tour. This travel agency focuses on smaller groups and can tailor the tour to meet your needs. The price for the tour was very reasonable relative to the value. We had the same tour guide Gufte and the same driver Sahli which was great for continuity. Gufte was extremely knowledgeable – she knew so much about the history of each city. Travel agents in Turkey are highly educated with a degree and have to be licensed. This was clear based on Gufte’s knowledge. It was amazing to see how much of the original city was preserved. We also loved the information she provided on the Turkish culture. We had the opportunity to see how Turkish carpet was made and to eat some good food at one of her favorite restaurants. Salih was also excellent driver, safe and extremely kind. We were transported in a beautiful new sprinter van. We were well taken care of. By the end of the tour we felt like Gufte and Salih were our new friends. Travel to Turkey is really economical right now for Americans give the value of the dollar to the local currency – so it is a good time to travel there. We also felt really welcomed by the Turkish people. If we are ever fortunate enough to go back to Turkey, we would definitely use Puerto Travel again and would request Gufte and Salih. Do not hesitate to book with Puerto Travel if you are looking for a guide in any part of Turkey.

Awesome tour of the ancient city of Ephesus among other places to visit. Güfte easy to find at the port and picked us up promptly. Güfte was very professional, nice, and knowledgeable about Turkey and its history. We needed cash (euros or USD) for admissions to the Virgin Mary and Ephesus ruins. We also had a great Turkish lunch and visited a couple shops. The transportation was clean and comfortable as well! If you are on a cruise and only have 1 day in Kusadasi, would recommend as a day trip to see ancient history in real life and interact with Turkish people.
