The Ibleo promontory is richly engraved by a dense hydro-geographical network. The erosive action of the water has created real canyons, among the most interesting and spectacular there is certainly the Cava Grande del Cassibile, one of the wonders of Sicily, a place where at the same time you can discover an almost uncontaminated nature and traces that man has left over the millennia.
In this impressive cleft of the plateau, the ancient Kakyparis, of which Thucydides speaks when he refers to the retreat of the Athenians in the context of the alatene events of the Peleponnesian war, in its 10km of the central part, where it reaches the width of about one thousand meters and the three hundred meters deep, it flows and continues to erode the soft Hyblean limestone with its pristine waters, forming the so-called "uruvi". Responsible are the pebbles carried by the current, in their whirling circle they crumble, the rock forming circular basins, small and deep lakes.

During the guided tour the naturalistic emergencies of the place will be described. The geological formation of the Canyon, the spontaneous plants, the curiosities and the legends of the territory. Once at the bottom of the valley there will be a lake with crystal clear water waiting for us in which it is possible to take a refreshing bath.

Great guide and canyon!

Gregorio is a fantastic guide. We hiked into Cavagrande del Cassibile to a beautiful swimming spot on the river. He described the geology, plants, and geography of the area. He had disinfectant for a cat scratch I got in the parking area, cups to drink from a pure water source, and he’s a mycologist! Together we found some interesting mushrooms! He’s very knowledgeable about many areas. He might guide my friend and me on a different outing soon.

Canyon Hike

Gregorio was a wonderful guide and we enjoyed our trek through Cavagrande. We would certainly recommend this hike for those wanting to experience nature in Sicily.

Very nice trekking with Gregorio, our guide who explained a lot of things about nature and the Cavagrande site which is just gorgeous. Nice little group, I spent a good time with them. I really recommend this activity. Thanks Gregorio !

Establishing the difference between the upper part, which is dry, and the lower part, so lush, and all because of the water.

The experience was excellent. Learning a bit about the geological history of Sicily was very interesting.

Beautiful experience group of girls

A pleasant, interesting, tiring half-day excursion to the right point. After several experiences with Gregorio (one more pleasant than the other) I invited some girls guests who had never done river excursions. They were pleasantly impressed with the really nice place and the competent professional guide who was able to make every explanation interesting.

A really beautiful experience... With our guide Gregorio... That not only accompanied us through the paths to get to the ponds, but told us about the flora and fauna of the territory, thus increasing our knowledge... Definitely an experience that I recommend and would do again....
