The Palace of Knossos
Knossos, het hart van de Minoïsche beschaving, ligt 5 km ten zuidoosten van Heraklion, in de vallei van de rivier Kairatos. De beroemdste historische attractie van Kreta, de site wordt beschouwd als de grootste archeologische vindplaats uit de bronstijd op het eiland en wordt de oudste stad van Europa genoemd. Knossos werd voor het eerst bewoond door een neolithische nederzetting in de zevende eeuw voor Christus. Het bleef duizenden jaren bewoond totdat het uiteindelijk werd verlaten in 1375 voor Christus na zijn vernietiging, wat het einde betekende van de Minoïsche beschaving. In 1878 werd de eerste grootschalige opgraving uitgevoerd door de rijke kunstliefhebber Minos Kalokairinos, terwijl Kreta nog onder Turkse bezetting was. Dit werd gevolgd door de langdurige opgravingen (1900-1913 en 1922-1930) van Sir Arthur Evans, die de hele omgeving van Knossos blootlegde.

Heraklion Archaeological Museum
Het Archeologisch Museum van Heraklion is een van de grootste en meest bezochte musea in Griekenland. Het is ook een van de belangrijkste musea in Europa. Het is de thuisbasis van artefacten uit alle perioden van de Kretenzische prehistorie en geschiedenis. De tentoonstellingen beslaan een chronologische tijdspanne van meer dan 5.500 jaar, van de neolithische periode tot de Romeinse tijd. De Minoïsche collectie bevat unieke voorbeelden van Minoïsche kunst, waarvan vele ware meesterwerken. Het Archeologisch Museum ligt in het centrum van Heraklion en werd tussen 1937 en 1940 gebouwd door de architect Patroklos Karantinos. Het werd gebouwd op een plaats die vroeger werd bewoond door het rooms-katholieke klooster van Sint-Franciscus, dat in 1856 werd verwoest door een aardbeving. De kleuren en bouwmaterialen die in het gebouw zijn gebruikt, zijn vergelijkbaar met bepaalde Minoïsche muurschilderingen.

Rethymnon
Rethymno ligt aan de noordkust van Kreta, ongeveer in het midden tussen de twee grote steden Chania (58 km ten westen) en Heraklion (79 km ten oosten). Het is de enige stad op het eiland die op een kaap is gebouwd. Er zijn twee kanten van Rethymno die twee soorten bezoeken bieden: het eindeloze grote strand en de oude stad met zijn mix van architectuur en geschiedenis. Our family absolutely loved this tour! From start to finish, it was such a fun, memorable, and special experience. If you want see the sights and have the local knowledge this is a great way to do it. Carlos and Christine were wonderful host. They really gave us an appreciation for the sights but also everyday life on Crete.

This tour was truly one of the highlights of our trip to Crete. From my very first message to Christine, while I was still planning everything from Mexico, she was incredibly kind and helpful. She provided detailed information, researched other tours for us and shared many thoughtful recommendations. On the day of the tour, Christine and our driver, Thanos, were wonderful. Throughout the journey, they told us fascinating stories about Crete and the region. They also made a special effort to engage my daughter and make the experience enjoyable for her, which was a detail I deeply appreciated. At Knossos, they arranged for us to have a Spanish speaking guide named Maria, who was simply exceptional. She was knowledgeable, engaging and brought the history of Knossos to life in a way that made our visit truly memorable. On the way back, Christine took us through beautiful Rethymno and even spent some time teaching us a little Greek, which was such a fun and personal touch. Everything was perfectly organized and right on time. They also provided snacks and drinks throughout the day. More than just a tour, it felt like spending the day discovering Crete with thoughtful and knowledgeable local friends. An absolutely wonderful experience from beginning to end. 10 out of 10. I could not recommend Christine, Thanos, Maria and SeaByBus Explore Crete more highly!
Christine and Thanos were wonderful hosts! They kept us entertained on the way to Heraklion. We learned about the history and culture of Crete and a little bit of the Greek language. The museum and palace are very impressive and worth visiting!
Tour very well organized. Christine was a great guide, telling us a lot about Crete on the long drive embellished by slides and videos and answering our questions. The van was comfortable; the driver was friendly and professional and kept us stocked with cold waters. Providing good snack boxes was such a good way to maximize our time to see the sights and visit the most attractions on our time limited shore excursion. Would definitely use again.
