We arranged the British D day tour with Mike. It was an outstanding experience and a great day. The tour was full of interesting relevant information and felt relaxed with time for reflection. We couldn't recommend this company highly enough.
We travelled as a group of four friends from the UK, staying in Bayeux. Our group wanted to learn more about the D-Day landings, what went right, what didn’t, the logistics and hear about the real people that took part. Any battleground can evoke mixed emotions, the desire for its history intwined with the hell of war and the loss that goes with it. We are so pleased with how Mike approached this, with his obvious passion for the subject, respect for those that perished and an uncanny ability to put us into the history of those moments. We will never, ever, forget this trip. To do justice to the history, we booked two full days of trips. We asked for a few specific places that we where aware of, but largely left Mike to plan the trip. Some of his other clients, Mike said, were very specific and required personal, detailed research, perhaps walking in the footsteps of a family member, from landing beaches, to the places of engagement and often, sadly to a grave site. Mike isn’t about the usual tourist trip, he is a story teller, a time traveller, a giver of facts , a deep respect for this time. He gives you the truth of what happened, pointing out the differences to Hollywood stories/ Films. He has in depth knowledge, getting as deep as you require. It’s not just a tank at the side of the road as a monument, maybe Mike will tell you the story of the tank, where it came from, how many made, perhaps its in the wrong place, or the year isn’t quite right. We had many moments where Mike is able to transport you back and place you at a scene. For instance, we were standing on one of the landing beeches, Mike set the scene .... For a moment the four of us were silent, as we realised the enormity of what those men were about to face. Part of the trip, which we would highly recommend, is how Mike put together the visit to The American, British / Commonwealth and German cemeteries. Explaining why here, how and what the setting out all means. It’s up to you to discover this, just take those moments to absorb the scene in front of you and let some emotions in. Although of course, war means death, so many sombre moments, we also had fun, if I may say that. You can of course do your own thing for lunches etc, but we found it much more interesting (fun?) to meet Mike for breakfast and take lunch together. We all learnt more about each other adding to the personal experience. Mike has a large people mover van, so getting from place to place was easy and a door to door service. All four of us, without hesitation, would highly recommend Mike.
Our tour was for two couples, and between us we had a significantly different mix of WWII knowledge. Mike judged it just right, ensuring that everyone was engaged without ever condescending. He was friendly, approachable, and very knowledgeable. Every question we asked was answered confidently, often with extra details and stories that really brought the history to life. The biggest compliment I can give him is that, despite our different levels of knowledge, all four of us finished the tour feeling we'd had a fantastic day and learned something new. It also helped that Mike shared our sense of humour, which made the whole experience feel relaxed, enjoyable, and very memorable. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend him to anyone with an interest in D-Day, whatever their level of knowledge.
Our day with Mike from Allied victory tours was the highlight of our week in Normandy. We selected the full-day American D-Day tour, and he was very accommodating to our request to modify it to include a visit to the German cemetery which had been recommended to us. Mike’s knowledge of the events and people involved and affected by D-Day is extraordinary, but he never overwhelms you with information. Instead, he provides an exceptional blend of the big picture events and information on various individuals and locations. The result is a very informative and meaningful day that explains the events of D-Day more clearly than most history books. We were a little concerned about whether we would find a full day tour too exhausting, but this was not a problem as Mike paces the day very well Plus, he is a very enjoyable person to spend time with. Our only regret was that we had not planned to do another tour with him.
We thoroughly enjoyed our D-Day Tour with Mike. He was flexible in meeting our requirements and put together a bespoke tour that worked out perfectly. The best thing was the insight and stories that Mike bought to the visit that we could not have had without his expertise. As well as being very knowledgeable he is charming company. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend Allied Victory Tours if you are visiting Normandy.
Mike picked us up from our Chateau and we had a great day We were a mixed group of 8 and he ensured we all had a great experience. Mike clearly knew his history, was very engaging and made the day fun while remaining respectful of those who had lost their lives all those years ago. Would definitely recommend. Thanks Mike!
Absolutely fantastic trip , great knowledge, very friendly, we all had a very informative and interesting day . Would 100% recommend
Our guide, Mike, was very personable and friendly. His knowledge of the events that unfolded on DDay and beyond was impressive. I would not hesitate on booking Mike again and I am planning to come back next year.
