Ronnie was an excellent guide. We had the most amazing morning at the sanctuary. We were very lucky to able to see the apes and learning about the rescue programme and the family dynamics of the orangutans. Ronnie was so knowledgeable and gave us such a personal tour and helpful hints about the Unesco heritage town.
The boat departure point for the island is Bukit Merah Laketown Resort, which was about an hour's drive away from Georgetown (from being picked up at 8am). The boat runs on a schedule so we did have to wait about half an hour once we arrived at the departure point, but that time was easily filled by going into the small visitor centre they have there. The boat ride is only a few minutes and you get about an hour on the island itself. A resident warden/guide took us around, telling us stories about the Orang-utans and the conservation work. Our guide Ronnie also accompanied us, he tried to entice the animals nearer with fruit bribes! - he is an experienced guide and knows the individual Orang-utans and their personalities. This was an amazing trip, well worth doing. Ronnie in particular was a great guide, we learnt a lot from him during the trip about Penang and Malaysia in general, not just about the Orang-utans. Highly recommended. Also recommend that you take some mosquito/insect spray with you!
This was a fabulous trip and it was greatly enhanced by Ronnie who was informative and made the walk around the Sanctuary extra special.
The trip with Ronnie to the Orangutan Sanctuary was fabulous! He picked us up in time, smooth drive and it shows that he is a regular there: the animals know him and they got fruit treats! The passion he has for this place is amazing. We got to see some of the animals close up and learned a lot about the conservation programme. I can highly recommend this experience off the beaten tourist tracks. Especially if you love animals. 😍
A great experience that provided a whole new insight into the plight of the Orangutan. The sanctuary is well run and our experience was made all the better by our guide Ronnie.
We had a lovely trip visiting the Orang Utan with our driver and guide, Ronnie. Ronnie was very knowledgeable and pleasant company.
Ronnie, our guide, was simply excellent. The car was roomy, safe and cool. Ronnie was an excellent and safe driver. His knowledge of the orange utans and of Penang as a whole was both entertaining and informative. The Bukit Merah Orang-utan Sanctuary was a 10 minute boat ride away after a 1 hour 40 min drive from Shanghai La Rasa, Batu Ferringhi. A very pleasant trip. The sanctuary staff were kind and knowledgeable and the orang utans were beautiful. It was a non invasive, observational experience. Great for individuals, couples or families.
