This private garden-to-table cooking experience takes place at a family home just outside Hiroshima City. You’ll cook with fresh vegetables grown by your hosts, along with seasonal herbs, fruits, and handmade preserved foods, while learning about everyday Japanese rural food culture.

Ideal for travelers who have already explored cities like Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto, this experience offers a refreshing change of pace. The scenic local train ride through rice fields, mountains, and rivers is part of the journey.

You’ll be welcomed into the host family’s home, where they live with their two children (ages 10 and 13). Through cooking, conversation, and time spent together, guests enjoy genuine hospitality and meaningful cultural exchange that goes beyond a typical cooking class.

What you'll do

Your experience begins with a pickup by car from the nearest JR station, followed by a short drive to the host family’s countryside home. Upon arrival, you’ll be greeted with a handmade welcome drink and time to relax . Next, you’ll tour the garden, where you can harvest seasonal vegetables and see edible herbs growing nearby. Your hosts will explain how these ingredients are used in everyday Japanese cooking and how the seasons influence what people eat. Using freshly harvested ingredients, you’ll prepare your meal together. The menu is arranged in advance based on your preferences, and vegan options are available. The highlight is real Japanese home cooking, including ichiju‑sansai, a traditional meal of rice, soup, and three small dishes. You can also choose well‑known dishes such as okonomiyaki, gyoza, sushi, or bento. Once the cooking is finished, everyone sits down to enjoy the meal together. Afterward, you can take a relaxed walk around the property or chat with the family and enjoy the peaceful rural atmosphere. Meeting & pickup

Hotel pickup is included for all travellers.

•The host and guests can meet each other without any difficulty. Because the JR Ibaraichi station is small and not crowded. •We plan to pick you up by car from the Ibaraichi station, but walking is also possible (about 20 minutes). If you would like to enjoy a walk, please let us know in advance. • You can also come directly to the host’s home by car. Parking is free; please inform us by email beforehand.

Get out of the city for this experience

My grandchild and I just spent a delightful afternoon with Satoko and her family. We went for a tour of their gardens and picked vegetables for our meal. We then ‘helped’ Satoko prepare the food and sat with her family to share the meal. It was just beautiful. Thank you Sakota and your beautiful family.

Highly Recommended!

We had an absolutely incredible experience at Satoko's home. Her and her children were brilliant hosts - from collecting and dropping us off at the local train station, to exploring Satoko's garden and learning about different vegetables and Japanese herbs, to cooking us a beautiful, authentic meal. A highlight for us was helping to make some of the dishes (sesame miso soup and pickled cucumbers) and learning about each ingredient. So much of what we ate was made from scratch by Satoko - from persimmon vinegar to pickled plums. Satoko's daughter also documented the day through brilliant photography which was shared with us afterwards. It was an absolute pleasure to meet her and her family and experience such a wonderful part of Japan. We would highly recommend this experience to anyone hoping for an authentic, slower paced, special insight into Japan.

The Hidden Gem Experience That Made Our Japan Trip Unforgettable

This was our second trip to Japan, and after taking many tours around the world, I can honestly say this was one of the most meaningful experiences we’ve ever had. This wasn’t just a sightseeing tour. It was an opportunity to experience Japanese home and culture and learn about the daily lives of people who live outside the big cities. We truly appreciated taking the local train, meeting Satoko and her family, and spending time with three generations living together in the same village. Their home is beautiful and it gave us an authentic glimpse into everyday life in Japan. One of the highlights was harvesting fresh vegetables from the garden and then preparing a homemade meal together. Satoko thoughtfully adjusted the menu to accommodate our dietary needs, and the food was absolutely delicious. We both love cooking, so this was an especially memorable experience for both of us. The children were so warm and welcoming. They played with us, practiced their English, and we learned so much from them as well. It was a genuine cultural exchange that made the day even more special. Satoko's daughter is an incredibly talented photographer. She captured beautiful moments throughout the experience and they shared the photos with us afterward. The pictures were professional, natural, and are memories we will treasure forever. This experience was authentic, heartfelt, and unforgettable. I cannot express enough appreciation for the kindness and hospitality we received. I highly, highly recommend this tour to anyone looking for a true cultural experience in Japan, beyond the usual tourist attractions.

A Truly Authentic Japanese Experience — One of the Highlights of Our Trip

BOOK THIS EXPERIENCE!! During our travels throughout East and Southeast Asia, we have had many memorable cultural experiences, but our time with Satoko was truly one of the most special. Her beautiful home and village are just a short train ride from Hiroshima, yet it feels like a completely different world away from the busy tourist areas. From the moment we arrived, Satoko warmly welcomed us into her home and made us feel like family. If you are looking for an authentic glimpse into Japanese countryside life, combined with a kind and gracious host, this experience is absolutely not to be missed. We spent time exploring Satoko's beautiful gardens alongside her, her father, and her children. We picked fresh ingredients directly from the garden to use in our meal and then enjoyed an incredible cooking class followed by one of the best home-cooked meals we have ever experienced while traveling. What made this experience so special was the genuine cultural exchange. Satoko and her family shared their traditions, stories, and daily life with us in such a warm and personal way. Her children were wonderful, and their kindness and hospitality made us feel truly welcomed into their home. BOOK THIS EXPERIENCE!! Satoko so warmly welcomed us into her beautiful home and village, a quick train ride from Hiroshima but a world away from anything we've ever experienced in our extensive travels across East and Southeast Asia. If you're looking for an authentic, local taste of the Japanese countryside with the kindest host, this experience cannot be beat. We explored Satoko's beautiful gardens with her, her father, and children, picked ingredients directly from the garden to include in our meal, and proceeded to have the best cooking class, cultural exchange, and home-cooked meal we've had in any of our travels. One of our favorite activities in Japan!

This was easily one of our favorite activities in Japan. Satoko welcomed us into her family home in the countryside. It’s an easy one route train from Hiroshima station. It takes about an hour, but the view is honestly amazing and nothing you would get in cities. The village is surrounded by mountains so the view there is stunning. We got to pick some seasonal vegetables and cook some dishes. Satoko completed the rest with homecooked recipes. Everything was delicious. I haven’t eaten most of the dishes anywhere else. Satoko was kind enough to share some recipes. We got to meet and talk with her two children. It was fun to teach them some words in French, English and Spanish and for us to learn some Japanese. They were so sweet and were very interested in learning more about us. The whole experience honestly felt like being welcomed by relatives and as if it lasted more than 4 hours. Will cherish this experience! Love from Canada xx
